The EIS has noted the publication of the annual survey of probationer teacher employment by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
The EIS believes that the survey identifies a welcome improvement in the job prospects for newly qualified teachers, but also warns that more needs to be done to ensure that all new teachers have reasonable opportunities to gain stable and secure employment.
Commenting on the publication of the survey today (Friday), Larry Flanagan said, "It is encouraging that the GTCS survey identifies a significant increase in the number of newly qualified teachers employed on permanent contracts.
"Last year, only a fifth of new teachers (20.9%) gained a full time permanent post, a figure that his risen substantially to more than a third of new teachers (35.4%) this year.
"This shows that steps taken to address the problem - including the guarantee on teacher numbers that the EIS secured as part of the last pay agreement and which Scottish Government has committed to continuing for the forthcoming year - are delivering better opportunities for newly qualified teachers.
"However, much more needs to be done to secure stronger employment prospects for the two-thirds of new teachers who still don't gain permanent full-time jobs or we will see an increase in the number of newly trained teachers who become lost to the system - already 1 in 10.
"A further area of concern that the report highlights is the dwindling number of supply teachers working across Scotland.
"The previous changes to supply teacher pay and conditions clearly have had a detrimental impact on the availability of supply teachers, a vital part of the education service, and the issue needs to be revisited.
"The EIS will be making this a priority in the imminent negotiations at the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT)."
