Lyme Disease – Hidden Hazard in the Great Outdoors

The dangers of Lyme Disease (Borreliosis), an infection which is transmitted to humans via tick bite, were highlighted at the EIS AGM (2010).

All teachers involved in school trips which involve walking in the countryside (at home or abroad) should be aware of the risks from tick bites and the precautions that should be taken.

This hazard should also be considered in risk assessments for such trips. Lyme Disease is only one of the infections that can be contracted from tick bites and the Borreliosis and Associated Diseases Awareness UK (BADA-UK) provides information on the risks from tick bites and advice on prevention and treatment.
