In Iran, trade unionists are subjected to continued persecution by the authorities.

Their trade union rights and civil liberties are denied and trade union leaders are detained for reasons connected with their activities in defence of the interests of workers.

The EIS has written a letter protesting the imprisonment of Esmail Abdi, leader of the Tehran Teacher Trade Association sentenced to six years in jail on bogus charges.

We would encourage members to sign the petition from the LabourStart campaign urging the Iranian authorities to take all necessary measures for the immediate and unconditional release of Esmail Abdi and other trade unionists detained for reasons connected with their activities in defence of the interests of workers.
