CPD and Lifelong Learning

Your stories

"I have been a multi-establishment Learning Rep (LR) for nearly four years now and I find the role stimulating and very rewarding. Here in Fife we are given one day a week to carry out our role and that could see us visit schools to discuss CPD with individuals, help set up a Learning Community, provide advice on resources, support links with staff and universities, help plan a school based CPD event or assist with the planning of a joint EIS/Fife Council CPD event.

Being a multi-establishment LR allows you to visit and engage with a range of individuals and educational institutions on a regular basis and offers you a stimulus you do not get by being a classroom teacher alone.

I would recommend the role to anyone who wants to assist colleagues and be at the forefront of educational theory and practice."

Colin Davidson, Fife LR

"In West Dunbartonshire, we have 3 Learning Reps (LRs) - myself as the multi-establishment LR covering all the schools from Faifley to Balloch as well as 2 single establishment LRs who are committed to their own schools.

Being an LR is a like a continuous CPD experience; it provides an overview of learning needs, facilitates meeting a wide range of colleagues and lifts the focus from personal to collegiate. I would commend it to anyone."
Ann Fisher, West Dunbartonshire EIS LR

"I have been an FE LR for about 3 years and am supported by Management in that I receive 3 hours timetable remission every week in which to carry out my LR duties.  My own Head of Department has taken full advantage of the knowledge I have gained during this time has made me "Department CPD Champion"!

I found the LR course very intellectually stimulating and it gave me much needed practice in on-line learning!  Being an LR has also given me the confidence to liase with senior members of staff at the college e.g. when organising a CPD event.  At Forth Valley College I have so far established a drop-in session and also have a message board where members can find out about the latest external CPD, they can also leave comments about any CPD they have taken part in.  I am also just about to carry out a survey which will compile data on CPD members are currently involved in, what kind of CPD they would like to take part in and will ask for their views about college CPD and the College's Personal Target and Review process.

Christine Muirhead, Forth Valley College LR
