2018/19 Teachers Pay Claim

A number of years of enforced austerity due to bailing out the banks has impacted teachers' pay.  Policies like the 1% public sector cap on pay increases have resulted in teachers' salaries being affected negatively by around 20% in real terms.

To address this the EIS has submitted a pay claim for 2018/19 of 10% in order to begin the process of getting teachers' salaries back in line with inflation.

You can keep up to date on the EIS website or through social media:

Share your Views

The EIS is keen to hear the views of our student members on the quality of their experience of Initial Teacher Education. What is going well in terms of the student teacher experience? Is there anything that is needed to enhance it?

If you have any thoughts that you’d like to share, please email these to Leigh Meechan

Contributions that our student members make to the discussion will be considered by the relevant national committees and matters taken forward as necessary on your behalf.

Thank you in anticipation of your assistance in this important area.

AGM Student Group

The EIS holds an Annual General Meeting every year with delegates representing members from all over Scotland and from all sectors of education. There are debates around some of the big issues in education and decisions are taken on the direction of the union and its policies for the next year.

This year the AGM will be held in Dundee from 7-9 June and there is an opportunity for a group of student members to attend the event for the day on Friday 8 June to listen in on the debate and participate in the fringe events.

If you are interested in being part of the EIS Student Group at the AGM please contact your EIS Organiser.

Graduating this year? Renew your Membership

If you are a post graduate or final year undergraduate student you will have indicated to GTCS your preferred choice of local authority for your induction year or have opted for the preference waiver.

Before the end of May you should know where you will be for your first year of teaching. Make sure that you upgrade your student EIS membership to full EIS membership at that point. The first 16 months of membership are free so there will be nothing to pay until January 2020.

What is the difference between EIS Student and EIS full membership?

As a full member it will still be free until January 2020 (if you started your probation in 2018), and you will get voting rights to take part in ballots and EIS local and national elections. You will have a vote in how the EIS is run, and be entitled to legal advice and representation at both local level and with GTCS procedures.
