EIS Opens Statutory Strike Ballot for Further Education Lecturers
Friday, 12 February 2016
The EIS has opened a statutory industrial action ballot for lecturers in further education colleges across Scotland.
The strike ballot is in support of the EIS Further Education Lecturers Association (EIS-FELA) pay claim for 2015-16, where EIS-FELA negotiators are seeking a fair pay settlement for lecturers and pay equality in colleges across Scotland.
All EIS-FELA members in the 16 colleges that have signed the National Recognition and Procedures Agreement (NRPA) will be balloted.
Commenting, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said, "The EIS submitted a pay claim more than 15 months ago, seeking a fair cost of living increase for lecturers and for colleges to commit to addressing the current pay inequity across the sector.
"Colleges are obliged to deliver the Scottish Government’s commitment for national bargaining on pay and conditions, so it is unacceptable that they have tabled an offer that would widen, rather than narrow, pay differentials for lecturers doing the same job in different colleges.
"The fact that colleges are now threatening to impose this unfair offer will only strengthen lecturers' resolve and lead to increased support for strike action."
EIS-FELA President John Kelly said, "Colleges are intending to impose an unreasonable, inequitable and non-agreed pay settlement on FE lecturers.
"This type of management imposition is not what lecturers expected from the much-lauded return to national bargaining that was promised by the Scottish Government.
"In this first negotiation under the national bargaining process, we have seen college management drag the process out for more than a year before making a completely unacceptable offer which doesn't even apply to all colleges.
"This is not national bargaining, and this is not a pay offer that FE lecturers are prepared to accept.
"I urge all members who are being balloted to use their vote to vote Yes for strike action in pursuit of a fair national pay settlement."
The statutory postal ballot opens Friday 12 February, and will close on Friday 4 March 2016.
Members are being balloted in the following colleges:
- Dumfries & Galloway
- Dundee & Angus
- Forth Valley
- Lews Castle
- New College Lanarkshire
- South Lanarkshire
- West College Scotland
- West Lothian.
