Industrial Action Ballot on SQA Assessment Workload Open

Tuesday 24 May 2016

The EIS has today (Tuesday) opened a statutory industrial action ballot for Secondary teachers in relation to the excessive assessment demands that are being placed on pupils and teachers by the SQA.

Postal ballot papers have been sent to EIS members in the Secondary sector today and the ballot will remain open until Thursday 16 June at 10am.

Commenting on the opening of the ballot, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said, "The EIS Executive and Council urge all members in the Secondary sector to use their vote in this important ballot.

"We are asking our members to support industrial action in the form of a work-to-contract, which would amount to a withdrawal of cooperation with the SQA.”

Mr Flanagan continued, "Teachers do not take industrial action lightly, and have shown a great deal of patience while waiting for the issue of excessive assessment workload to be addressed.

"However, now that talks have concluded without resolution, teachers’ patience is at an end and the EIS has decided to move forward with this ballot on industrial action.”

Mr Flanagan added, ""I am certain that our members will vote to support this move to industrial action.

"By taking collective action, through Scotland’s largest teaching union, EIS members can be successful in demanding a reduced assessment burden on pupils and teachers.”
