Lower back pain is the single biggest cause of disability in the world, causing more disability than cancer, diabetes, asthma, heart disease and Alzheimers combined, affecting 80% of adults at some time in their lives – and now affecting twice as many teenagers as it did 16 years ago.
In this practical session you will learn the underlying causes of back pain, why it recurs so commonly, and how to reduce your future risk.

3.  Happiness and Wellbeing – Dr Neil Thin:

Dr Neil Thin is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh.
What difference does to make to adopt a ‘wellbeing’ lens in policy, practice and personal life planning?  After a brief presentation on the rapid growth of attention to happiness and wellbeing in scholarship and planning, we will discuss the personal and collective implications of this as we try to enable schools to become places where teachers and pupils ‘flourish’.  We will explore the roles of positivity (appreciative and aspirational planning), ‘empathy’ (considering people’s feelings and perspectives) and ‘integration’ (thinking about how the many different parts of people’s lives and identities to result in wellbeing or illbeing.
