PROMOTING LEADERSHIP IN SCOTLAND'S TEACHING PROFESSION
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has today launched a new publication that aims to foster and promote leadership in Scotland's schools. The new EIS publication, which is being sent to every school in Scotland, highlights the leadership role that all teachers, irrespective of level of post, can play in schools.
Commenting on the launch of the new policy, EIS President David Drever said, “The EIS knows that many teachers possess natural leadership qualities that enable them to take the initiative in driving forward innovative teaching and learning. In modern school life, leadership is not just about a teacher's level of promotion and fulfilling management tasks. While the EIS fully recognises and acknowledges the import roles and responsibilities of school management teams, we are equally sure of the importance of leadership at all levels of the teaching profession.”
He added, ”With new collegiate working practices in schools that are designed to utilise the many diverse skills of the entire teaching staff, it is important that we recognise and encourage effective leadership at all levels. This new policy, published today, is aimed at supporting leadership skills in all teachers. By doing this, we hope to encourage all of Scotland's teachers to take pride in their ability to lead on important issues such as curricular change, which will bring real tangible benefits to Scotland's education system and for Scotland's pupils.”
