Commenting on the interim changes to National 5 Qualifications, announced today by Deputy First Minister John Swinney, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said:

"It is a matter of regret that this Scottish Government advice has been a long time in coming, as this has led to significant uncertainty for schools over a prolonged period.”

"The EIS does, however, welcome this strong message around the alleviation of the excessive workload burden that has been placed on teachers and pupils.

"It is encouraging that there is emphasis on the importance of the quality of the learner experience within the Senior Phase, on alternative curriculum architecture and an exit qualification approach rather than annual presentation.”

"In order that these aims are realised, issues around N4 also need to be addressed by the A&NQ (Assessment & National Qualifications) Review Group within an appropriate timescale”.
