College Dispute May Reignite

Friday 02 June 2017

The EIS has warned that the recent bitter college dispute may reignite if Colleges Scotland once again seek to renege on a deal which it has signed up to in respect of delivering equal pay across the sector.

Following a meeting of the EIS – FELA leadership, today, a request has been made to the EIS Executive Committee to re-instate the suspended strike action at the beginning of the next academic session if the Employers fail to implement the pay elements by the end of July 2017.

Whilst EIS FELA is committed to future meetings with employers, at the NJNC to finalise un-agreed areas, EIS FELA Executive is keen to ensure that the May 2017 Agreement is honoured in full as soon as possible.

Following the meeting EIS General Secretary, Larry Flanagan, commented, "The EIS met its obligation to immediately suspend the strike action and it is deeply concerned that the Employers have not moved to 'immediately implement the pay elements' as was agreed, and have even stated that payment may not be made until August."

"This dispute was over the failure of Colleges Scotland to honour a previous deal; lecturers will react with anger at any prospect that College management may yet seek to renege on a further agreement, especially when all parties, including Scottish Government, are agreed that the funding is there to pay for the deal."

The EIS FELA Executive will meet again in a special meeting on the 16th June 2017 to review progress made on the non-agreed areas with a view to progressing ratification of the May 2017 NJNC Agreement.

Furthermore, the Executive will review the progress made by the Employers in implementing the pay element of the March 2016 NJNC Agreement. The Employers have acknowledged that the implementation of the pay elements is not conditional on ratification.
