Exam Results Testament to the Hard Work of Pupils and Teachers

Tuesday 08 August 2017

The EIS has welcomed the publication of a strong set of SQA exam results.

Commenting, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said, "Scotland’s pupils and teachers should be proud of this strong set of results, achieved during a significant period of change for Scottish education.

"This year's results demonstrate that pupils and Scotland's schools continue to perform well despite teachers having to deliver the new qualifications in extremely challenging circumstances.”

He added, "The results that have been announced today are a credit to the hard work of pupils across Scotland and we should acknowledge and celebrate this success.”

Mr Flanagan continued, "Scotland’s teachers have again gone that extra mile to support their students’ learning, despite the enormous workload pressures faced by the profession.

"However, the EIS expects to see a significant reduction in workload over the forthcoming session and will hold both Scottish Government and the SQA to account on delivering the promised reduction in the assessment burden on both staff and pupils.

"Frankly, the goodwill of teachers has run out.”

He concluded, "The National Qualification Review Group, Chaired by the DFM, needs to conclude its work quickly and ensure that the ongoing concerns of teachers are fully addressed.”
