Additional Support for Learning twilights

This introductory course comprises 3x 3-hour twilights which will improve learners’ confidence, skills and knowledge in relation to:

Week 1: Autism

Week 2: Social, emotional & behavioural needs

Week 3: Speech and language impairments

All 3 sessions should be attended. Applications are particularly welcomed from nursery and primary school teachers.

Specific learning outcomes for each part of the course are as follows:

Week 1:

  • What autism is
  • What the indicators of autism are
  • The range of ways in which autism can present in children and young people
  • Ways in which autism can impact on learning and relationships
  • Strategies that can help support learners with autism
  • Where learners can find further support, resources and information, including those for parents and carers as well as teachers and learners.

Week 2:

  • The range of social, emotional and behavioural needs (SEBN) children and young people might have
  • The range of situations and experiences that can give rise to SEBN
  • Ways in which SEBN can impact on learning and relationships
  • Evidence-based approaches that can help support learners with SEBN
  • Where participants can find further support, resources and information including those for parents and carers as well as teachers and learners.

Week 3

  • The range of impairments or difficulties that come under the ‘umbrella’ term ‘speech and language impairment’
  • What the indicators of these difficulties are
  • The range of ways in which speech and language impairment can present in children and young people
  • Ways in which speech and language impairment can impact on learning and relationships
  • Evidence-based strategies that can help support learners with speech and language impairments
  • Where learners can find further support, resources and information, including those for parents and carers as well as teachers and learners.

Glasgow: Tuesdays 20 and 27 February and 6 March 2018, 5-8pm, STUC, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow, G3 6NG.
