EIS welcomes revised Standard for Chartered Teachers

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has welcomed today's announcement of a revised Standard for Chartered Teacher. Around 4,500 Scottish teachers are working on the CT Programme which leads to the award of a Masters degree and the award of Chartered status from the General Teaching Council for Scotland. The Chartered Teacher programme was designed to allow highly experienced teachers to remain in the classroom rather than follow the promotion route into a school management post.

Welcoming today's announcement, General Secretary Ronnie Smith said, “"The EIS welcomes this refresh of the Standard for Chartered Teacher, and hopes that this will provide a stimulus for an even greater number of eligible teachers to engage with the Chartered Teacher programme. All of the stakeholders should use the opportunity provided by this relaunch to do everything possible now to promote actively the merits of the CT scheme, in line with Recommendation 3 of the Chartered Teacher Review Group."

He added, “Research shows the benefits that Chartered Teachers are bringing to the schools and local authorities where they work, and it is essential that we continue to promote the CT scheme and encourage eligible teachers to sign up for the programme. However, in this time of budget cutbacks and a lack of resources for Continuing Professional Development, we will need to ensure that access to Chartered Teacher programmes is not cut-back or curtailed. The decision to follow the CT route is always one for the individual teacher, and should not be influenced by budget-driven concerns at local authority level. It is also essential that Chartered Teachers are paid the salary increments due to them while undertaking their course and upon completion.”
