United for education 'day of action'
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), Scotland’s largest union for teachers and lecturers with over 60,000 members, rallied public support yesterday (Monday 21st June) with a national petition against cuts in further and higher education.
Senior representatives of the EIS from the College and University sectors collected over 700 signatures on Princes Street - Edinburgh as part of the national effort.

David Belsey, national officer for further and higher education at the EIS, said funding had been frozen in Scotland and deep cuts were expected. "By signing the petition, people can make sure politicians are aware of the public feeling against cuts to e

ducation."
EIS General Secretary Ronnie Smith said, "Lecturers and students from across the UK are working together to fight back against the damaging cuts facing our education system.
"Education is vital to the future prosperity of our country, so we must do all that we can to stand up for our education system and fight these damaging and short-sighted cuts. We must send a message that investing in education now is the best way to ensure a better and brighter economic future for the entire country.”
