The Evolving Role of the Middle Leader Within the Scottish Attainment Agenda

This report outlines systematic review of the impact and role of middle leadership in attainment, examining areas including enhanced additional SAC/PEF funding, evolving management structures, and within and outwith literacy, numeracy, Health and Wellbeing or STEM subjects. This serves to highlight motivational factors in professional learning and capacity building and organisational culture that make a positive contribution to closing the attainment gap, but with a view to collegiate working within professional learning and identifying trends.
Findings in this study give a broader picture of the role of Faculty Heads, career progression and impact on attainment. For example, questionnaires of Faculty Heads movement within the targeted Local Authority and associated motivational factors to implement change and the supports that can be put in place for allowing impactful change (Professional Learning).
Also, engagement with funding initiatives will be highlighted e.g. Expressive Arts awards from PEF/SAC vs Literacy. Do staff continue to feel motivated to seek this funding to make a difference in closing the attainment gap, given the constraints in “bidding” alongside delivering high quality learning and teaching experiences for young people?
