  •  Prevalence and impacts of psychological trauma
  • What traumatic memories are, how and why they form
  • How this looks in school for different age groups
  • Impacts on learning, behaviour and wellbeing

  • Recognising and responding to triggers and avoidances
  • What children need after a recent event (critical incidents)
  • Whole school considerations – policies and staff wellbeing

Content includes:

 - The range of developmental impacts of early trauma including:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Sense of self
  • Executive function, memory and attention
  • Language and communication
  • Behavioural inhibition
  • Social cognition and relationships

 - How these look at different ages in educational settings for learning and behaviour.

  • promote positive development and recovery
  • adapt learning and environment for a range of needs

Session 3: Working in a traumatised system

The session draws on research on secondary trauma to explore:

  • The impact on staff when needs rise faster than resources
  • What is “compassion fatigue” and how does it affect individuals and organisations?
  • What we can, and can’t, do to fix the systems around us
  •  Working and living well in a context that makes this difficult
