You will get to attend 3 workshops as part of this event with a choice of 4 topics to choose from. Here are the options:
Workshop 1: Getting Support as a Student Teacher - this workshop will look at the support available to student teachers. How do we address potential bumps in the road? Who can you speak to for support? How can you resolve issues that may arise whilst at university and during your school placement? This workshop will explore individual and collective routes to resolving challenges and ensure you have a voice, with influence. Led by EIS Organisers and NUS Scotland
Workshop 2: Know Your Rights at Work - we recognise that many student teachers are also likely to be in employment whilst they study. This is an introductory session on workplace rights- what they are, and how to navigate them. The realities around the issue of insecure work, various contract types and low pay are real concerns for working students. This session will hopefully help in debunking the myths, give you relevant information to help you in any workplace, and provide a route to end exploitation. Led by EIS Area Officer
Workshop 3: At Home and In Your Community - Tenants’ Rights - the workshop will explore the relationship between work and housing and how we win improvements to our daily lives. What rights do you have in relation to your housing situation? How can you exercise those rights? How do we ensure everyone has access to decent and affordable housing? In this session you will learn about the importance of building collective power in the workplace and in our communities. Led by Living Rent Tenants' Union
Workshop 4: Safe, Included and Valued – Towards Equality in Education - the EIS has a commitment to high standards of education rooted in equality and inclusivity. Pupils and students have the right to learn, and teachers and lecturers have the right to work in an educational environment that is free from discrimination, where the rights of all are upheld. This workshop will give an overview of key equality issues on the education agenda, today, and will offer a shared space to reflect on students’ own observations, aspirations, and practice.
