GTCS Professional Update - How To Guide for Lecturers

Created on: 08 May 2026

Think of professional updates as a continuous cycle which strengthens your practice, boosts confidence, and keeps your development meaningful and relevant. Update your MyGTCS as you go and the update process will be a smooth one.

Your Yearly CPL Cycle

Each year, you’ll take part in a Professional Review and Development (PRD) with your manager. This is your opportunity to reflect, celebrate progress, and set clear goals for the year ahead. Before this meeting, you’ll can reflect on the professional standards for lecturers.

The insights you gather from your PRD and reflections on your practice help shape your Professional Learning (PL) for the coming year. Your PL can include any learning you engage with—formal or informal—including activities such as peer review. Keep your MyGTCS profile updated throughout the year. By recording your learning as you go, your Professional Update (PU) becomes much easier when it takes place every five years, and you build an annual reliable record of your ongoing professional development.

MyGTCS

MyGTCS is the main system for recording professional learning and development. Your curriculum manager has access to this and can use the evidence here for your PRD.

GTCS allows members to update three sections in their profile to build a clear picture of their professional journey for the Professional Update. During this process, you are signed off by your curriculum manager, who is linked to your profile and acts as your ‘reviewer’.

The three sections are:

  • CPD / Professional Learning

  • Professional Review and Development

  • Areas for Development

Areas for Development

Here members can upload their individual targets set out in their Great Conversations and areas from the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour Framework that are perhaps not covered in their targets.

To add an area for development simply click on add new AFD. Add title, target date, the standards it links to, and a reflection on what you hope to achieve. You also have the option to upload files and add notes. These areas for development should inform your professional learning for the year, it can also form the focus on your Peer Review.

Ideally choose CPD activities which relate to the areas you are trying to develop. You should then select the standards that apply to the training from the list (Standards for College Lecturers). There may be multiple standards covered (choose as many as you like):
Impact (of the cpd activity): This is the key part. Focus on what changes you might make to your teaching and the perceived impact for you and your students.
(You can upload files/photos and add any additional notes)

Professional Review and Development

In this section of the GTCS members can upload a document evidencing their PRD as set out by their own organisation. This should be done yearly.
