Scottish Borders EIS Critical Of Council Over Early Learning and Childcare Proposals

Created on: 06 Jun 2025

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) teaching union in Scottish Borders has raised serious concerns over the proposed compositing of early learning and childcare provision with P1 and/or P2 in three settings in Scottish Borders.

Ednam, Channelkirk and Cockburnspath Primary Schools may be affected by the Council’s proposals. The EIS has heavily criticised the direction of travel the Council plans to embark upon.

Commenting, Local Association Secretary Natasha York said: “If we want the best for all our children, then the needs of every child must be met within the most appropriate setting. This cannot be done by combining the very different requirements of early learning/childcare and primary education in the way that Scottish Borders Council is proposing."

The EIS, Scotland’s largest and most active teaching trade union, has expressed concerns about early learning and childcare being subsumed into primary schools, thereby undermining the effective delivery of both services. The union has severely criticised the Scottish Borders Council over its proposals.
