Local and National officials of the EIS will address a campaign meeting in Glenrothes this Wednesday (18th February), as Fife parents and school staff continue to stand united against a planned programme of education cuts across the Fife local authority area.
EIS national representatives and Fife local association officials will join with school staff, parents and other supporters of quality education at the Stop School Cuts public meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 18th February at Rothes Halls in Glenrothes to discuss the ongoing campaign to protect quality education in Fife’s schools.
Scottish education has faced significant real-terms cuts in funding in recent years, despite significant growth in the number of young people in schools with an identified Additional Support Need (ASN).
The Fife proposals include a 3.2% real-terms reduction in Devolved School Management budgets for the coming year, with deeper cuts to follow in subsequent years.
Commenting ahead of the public meeting, EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley said, “The EIS nationally supports EIS Fife local association, and Fife’s parents, carers and school staff in their continuing campaign to stand up for quality education in all Fife schools.
No local authority should be proposing cuts to their school budgets, as education is key to improving the life chances of young people from all backgrounds. Funding allocated to education is an investment in our young people, and in the future of our communities across the country.”
Ms Bradley added, "The EIS urges Fife Council, and other local authorities considering cuts to education budgets, to think again and put the best interests of young people first. Education is the bedrock of our society, and funding for education is invariably money well spent.
Not only does education benefit the young people in our schools, but it also brings a wide range of societal and economic benefits for our communities and the nation as a whole. Investing in education, schools and young people must be a priority for Fife Council, and for every council in Scotland.”
All supporters of quality education in Fife, and members of the media, are invited to attend the public meeting this at 7pm this Wednesday, 18th February, at Rothes Halls in Glenrothes.
