The EIS ULA has reaffirmed its determination to secure a no compulsory redundancy guarantee for all staff at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).
The ongoing dispute, which centres on safeguarding high-quality education, research and protecting jobs, remains unresolved due to senior leadership’s continued refusal to address the significant concerns of the workforce.
Members at GCU have already taken an unprecedented fourteen days of strike action in protest against the ongoing threat of compulsory redundancies and have been joined on a number of those days by colleagues from UCU and Unison.
A large cohort of students are expressing support for the strikes, many of whom have visited the picket line. Despite this clear message from the unions, University management has remained intransigent, not only continuing with its compulsory redundancy processes but failing to engage in any meaningful discussions to resolve the dispute.
Escalating their industrial action, EIS ULA members are set to take a further four days of strike action next week and have served formal notice of further strike dates across October and November.
The ongoing escalation reflects the growing frustration among staff who are being forced to take strike action in order to protect their jobs, and is the last resort in response to the continued threat of redundancies hanging over staff.
Condemning the response of university executives, EIS General Secretary, Andrea Bradley said, "The persistent absence and inaction of GCU management throughout this dispute is deeply disappointing and deeply concerning.
"Senior leaders have failed to meaningfully engage with EIS representatives to discuss a resolution. By choosing to ignore the legitimate concerns of its staff, management is abandoning its responsibility to both employees and students."
Ms Bradley continued, "We commend our members at Glasgow Caledonian University for their unwavering courage, solidarity, and commitment during these fourteen days of strike action and as we prepare for the upcoming strike dates.
"Taking strike action is never an easy decision, but the remarkable unity shown across campus, and between the different recognised trade unions, demonstrates just how vital the fight against compulsory redundancies is for the future of GCU."
Reiterating its commitment to finding a suitable resolution, the EIS ULA remains fully prepared to enter meaningful talks with GCU leadership at any time to settle the dispute.
The union urges management to return to the negotiating table with a genuine commitment to provide the requested no compulsory redundancy guarantee, thereby bringing an end to the disruption and restoring stability to the university community.
GCU planned strike dates are as follows:
Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th, Thursday 15th and Friday 16th October;
Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd October;
