EIS ULA Continues Strike Action at GCU as Redundancy Threat Persists

Created on: 28 Oct 2026

Staff at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), represented by EIS ULA, took further strike action on Monday and will also be on strike Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week in defence of jobs and to secure and maintain high-quality education at the Institution.

Thursday will mark their twenty fifth day of action in this dispute so far, with a further eight days scheduled and additional dates being considered beyond this.

The continuing strike action follows the University management’s continued refusal to withdraw threats of compulsory redundancies, leaving staff with no alternative but to remain resolute in their industrial action to protect the future of the University.

A focal point of this week’s action is scheduled for Thursday, when Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), and Roz Foyer, General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), will join those on the picket line to demonstrate nationwide trade union solidarity.

EIS General Secretary, Andrea Bradley said, "Our members at Glasgow Caledonian University have been backed into a corner by a university management that continues to hold the threat of compulsory redundancies over hard-working academic and academic-related staff.

"Rather than engaging in constructive dialogue to resolve this dispute, university leaders have repeatedly failed to meet with us and negotiate, instead burying their heads in the sand hoping all of this will all go away. But the EIS will always come out fighting against job losses.”

Ms Bradley continued, "This ongoing intransigence and refusal to protect jobs is causing severe disruption and taking a heavy toll on staff morale, while detrimentally affecting the learning environment for students across the University. Quality education cannot exist on the shaky foundations of job insecurity and way-overstretched staff.”

Ms Bradley added, "We are delighted to welcome Paul Nowak and Roz Foyer to Thursday’s picket line. Their presence underlines the strength of support across the broader trade union movement for our members at GCU and union members across the Higher Education sector who have long suffered the impacts of under-funding and weak governance of our universities.

"We stand united: management must drop the threat of compulsory redundancies and return to the table to negotiate a fair, lasting resolution, in the interests of quality higher education at this institution."
