Lecturers at UWS and RGU to Take Strike Action in Fight Against Job Cuts

Created on: 28 Aug 2025

EIS members at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) are to commence strike action in an escalation of a dispute over job cuts and planned redundancies at the university.

A recent ballot, organised by the EIS, resulted in a strong majority vote in favour of strike action, with 94% of those voting backing strike action.

The EIS has now notified the university of the move to strike action and again urged the UWS management to return to the negotiating table with a promise to rule out compulsory redundancies.

EIS members at Robert Gordon University (RGU) will also take another day of strike action next month, with no progress made on reaching a resolution on the redundancy dispute there. The day of action is in addition to the previous five days of strike taken by members over April and May.

EIS members at both universities will take strike action on Thursday 11th September, with further strike dates at UWS taking place throughout September and October.

Commenting, EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley said, “Any move to strike action is taken as a last resort, but our members at UWS and RGU have been left with no alternative as they seek to fend off each university’s cuts agenda.”

"The EIS will always stand in opposition to the threat of compulsory redundancies, and our members at both universities will now commence strike action as their respective campaigns against job cuts continue.”

Ms Bradley continued, “The move to strike action at UWS follows on from a very clear ballot result, where our members have indicated their willingness to take strike action to oppose the university’s programme of cuts. Members at RGU achieved a similar ballot result in April this year and continue to take action in support of colleagues whose jobs are still at risk.”

Ms Bradley added, “The EIS again offers both universities the opportunity to bring these disputes to an end by halting their programme of cuts and ruling out compulsory redundancies. It is in the best interests of both UWS and RGU, their students and staff, for an agreement to be reached that will ensure a fair resolution for all concerned.”
