Members of the Educational Institute of Scotland University Lecturers Association (EIS ULA) at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) are on strike today with another day of strike action set for Friday 3rd October, in relation to their ongoing dispute with university management over planned redundancies.
The continuation of strong strike action underscores the deep-seated concerns of staff regarding job security and the potential detrimental impact on the quality of education and research at UWS.
Despite having taken four days of industrial action and repeated calls from the EIS for meaningful dialogue to resolve the dispute, UWS management have chosen to push forward with their planned redundancies with little to no cognisance of the effect this is having on their staff or students.
The EIS firmly believes the proposed cuts are unnecessary and will severely compromise the learning experience for students and increase workload pressures on remaining staff, leading to a further erosion of morale and an unsustainable working environment.
EIS General Secretary, Andrea Bradley, said, “Our members stand resolute in their determination to ensure job security and maintain the high standards of education at UWS. The EIS is always willing to meet and discuss alternative proposals that avoid redundancies and protect the vital contribution of highly skilled and dedicated staff.
"If the University pushes forward with its redundancy plans, it will mean an increased workload for those that remain, which will have a detrimental impact on the teaching and learning of students across the communities which UWS serve."
She continued, “The door to constructive dialogue remains open, we urge the University to stop ignoring the dispute and seize this opportunity to avert further disruption and work towards a fair outcome for all."
The EIS remains steadfast in its commitment to defending its members' livelihoods and safeguarding the long-term academic integrity and provision at the University of the West of Scotland.
The EIS reiterates its call for UWS management to meet with representatives and seeks a genuine commitment to resolving this dispute. We call on students, the wider University community, and the public to support our efforts as we fight to protect jobs and the future of higher education for all current and future students who would attend UWS.
