More City of Glasgow College strike days issued, strike pay boosted for the welding lecturers

Striking lecturers from the City of Glasgow College (CoGC) Welding and Fabrication department are to continue with their programme of strike action in their ongoing dispute over the Health & Safety of staff and students within the department.

The EIS has today (Thursday) issued formal notice of 12 further days of strike action in the coming weeks.

The lecturers are currently engaged in a programme of strike action over Health and Safety issues in the department at the college’s Riverside campus, including the lack of adequate safety measures to protect staff and students from welding fumes, which are known to be carcinogenic.

In a display of its continuing support for its members, the EIS has agreed that the striking lecturers will now qualify for full strike pay, equivalent to their normal net rate of pay, for future strike days.

The General Secretary of the EIS recently wrote directly to the college Principal, raising significant concerns about both the college’s approach to protecting the Health and Safety of staff and students engaged in welding and, also, the college’s response to the dispute.

Commenting EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley said: “The EIS stands fully behind our members in the Welding and Fabrication department at City of Glasgow College in their ongoing struggle to secure adequate health and safety protections within their workplace. It is simply incredible that CoGC – a publicly funded institution – is refusing to take the very sensible steps to protect the health and wellbeing of lecturers and students undertaking welding activities within the college. Instead, the college has only inflamed the dispute with its hard-line and managerialist approach to members’ safety worries.”

Ms Bradley added: “The EIS will now be paying full strike pay to the lecturers involved in this dispute, as a sign of our ongoing commitment to our members. We would urge the college management to cease their belligerent attitude towards staff members who are only seeking a safe place in which to work and to study, and to work with the EIS to agree on a resolution to this dispute. Protecting the health and safety of staff must always be a top priority for any employer, and this is particularly the case in a place of learning where students of all ages, including many of school age, could potentially be placed at risk.”

The strike dates notified to CoG college today are:

  • Tuesday 21st April, Wednesday 22nd April, Thursday 23rd April, Friday 24th April.
  •  Monday 27th April, Tuesday 28th April, Wednesday 29th April, Thursday 30th April.
  • Tuesday 5th May, Wednesday 6th May, Thursday 7th May, Friday 8th May.
