EIS Further Education Lecturers’ Association – Industrial Action
|
Following unsatisfactory pay offers from College Employers Scotland, members of the EIS-FELA, across all of Scotland’s colleges will shortly be re-balloting to extend their mandate for industrial action over pay. The ballot will open in late November and run for six weeks.
Member Action: Please support your local FELA college members by sending solidarity messages to the branch and via social media.

City of Glasgow College – Industrial Action
|
City of Glasgow College branch have been taking part in sustained strike action in defence of jobs.
They have now secured a second industrial action mandate via a statutory ballot and further action commenced on Tuesday 14th November.
Member Action: Please support EIS-FELA colleagues by sending messages of solidarity and following @EISFela on twitter to find out where and when they will be picketing.

If you have new colleagues in your school, try to recruit them to the EIS. If they are already EIS members, they should update their school base or personal contact details on the MyEIS section of the website.
Remind them to log on using their EIS number. It is quick and simple to set up a password. Alternatively, as a Rep, you should have access to member lists for your school and you can update details on their behalf.

Your EIS Local Association
|
It is important for school reps to engage with their Local Associations in order for information and views to be shared to Local Association Secretaries and EIS staff who attend LA meetings, and for information to get from the LA into schools.
Please keep in contact with your Local Association Secretary and your Local Association Committee of Management/ Executive Committee.

Some independent schools choose not to recognise trade unions, despite high levels of EIS membership. The EIS will continue to push for recognition and representation to ensure that our members are treated fairly and are aware of their rights.
Action for Reps: If you and your colleagues wish to get your EIS Branch recognised by your independent school then please contact your nearest Organiser.

We have a team of eight Organisers to support Local Associations, Branches and Reps. If you would like an Organiser to support you or your branch in an (in-person or online) meeting, then please contact your Organiser.
Our Organisers can support local campaigning, school issues, provide training, branch building advice and brief members on our national campaign – Stand Up for Quality Education.

Training is available for all EIS reps, both new and experienced, and for activists interested in becoming an EIS rep.
The EIS has developed training courses with the TUC that are TUC accredited. These courses include EIS Reps Stage 1, bespoke FELA and ULA Rep training and Health and Safety Rep training.
A list of upcoming training opportunities for reps is available on the EIS website.
If you are a Rep or an activist then please contact your Local Association Secretary to be nominated for one of these courses.

This guide is designed to help trade unions, and by extension trade unionists, to better understand trans equality.
The guidance forms part of a range of guidance produced by the STUC LGBT Workers' Committee to help promote LGBT equality in trade unions.

Palestine and Israel, Understanding the Conflict
|
With the latest outbreak of violence in the region, members may find our skills-based resource, focusing on the conflict between Palestine and Israel, helpful in supporting pupils to understand the conflict.
In a turbulent world, it is essential that pupils are equipped to navigate contested topics, evaluate evidence and arrive at their own conclusions.
Materials, containing both Student and Teacher Guides, can be accessed on our website.

Informal Equality Networks
|
The informal EIS Equality Networks connect EIS members who are underrepresented in the profession and support them in keeping up to date with equality news and initiatives.
The Networks advise the EIS Equality Committee on equality issues and provide an opportunity for members to shape EIS policy.

Our Wellbeing, It Matters!
|
Saturday 13th January 2024
Members from across Scotland are invited to a wellbeing conference on Saturday 13th January, 10am-2.30pm, at the Radisson Blu, Glasgow, and a day focused on collaboratively building our workplace wellbeing through a variety of workshops that will consider wellbeing through an equalities lens, building a collective wellbeing voice, and practical tools for enhancing workplace wellbeing.

This is a crucial year in the fight against racism. Racist UK immigration policy and rhetoric is only getting worse. We need to stand together in a show of solidarity after a year of the far right trying to gain footholds in our communities.
Assemble: 10.30am at Glasgow Green
March off: 11am
Rally: 12 noon at Technology and Innovation Centre, Strathclyde University.
Bring your banners and flags!
The Institute will cover reasonable travel expenses for those attending.
