Our Voices In Union

Our Voices in Union is a two-year project which aims to grow the leadership and improve the representation of BAME, LGBT, disabled, neurodivergent and young members within their own workplaces, and within the Union.

 

The first year of the project will be a hybrid (part online, part in-person) leadership course with 5 Modules organised around three themes: Fair Work, Leadership and Equality.

 

The second year will provide opportunities for participants to put their leadership skills into practice.

 

The course is open to:

 

  • Black Asian or Minority Ethnic members
  • LGBT+ members
  • Disabled members
  • Neurodivergent members
  • Members who are 27 or under

 

 

It is expected that the course will run from November 2023 to February 2024, with the following dates identified:

 

 

Thursday 9th November

2-6pm

 

(EIS HQ, Edinburgh)

 

 

Module 1: Welcome & Overview

 

 

 

An introduction to, and overview of, the course, featuring speakers and a workshop, and followed by dinner and entertainment.

 

 

Tuesday 12th December

4.30pm-7pm

 

(Online)

 

 

Module 2: Taking Fair Work Forward Through the Union: Amplify Your Voice

 

 

An online seminar featuring presentations, an overview of the EIS structure, and a workshop on motion writing and speech writing.

Module 3: Key emerging Equality Issues

 

Online learning pages on key and emerging equality issues to be completed over a period of time.

Module 4: Wellbeing seminar as part of the EIS campaign ‘Stand Up for Quality Education’

 

Participants will together attend a seminar on the connection of inequality and health, as part of wider EIS activity.

Module 5: Taking the Lead: What next?

 

 

An action planning workshop and celebration of completion of the course, beginning planning for solidarity conference.

 

 

 

The course is free, costs associated with in-person attendance will be covered by the EIS, and accessibility adjustments will be made where possible. Priority will be given to members who can commit to all sessions and a selection may be made to achieve a demographic balance.

It's that time of year when we need to start thinking about Working Time Agreements; how well the one for this year has reflected the demands of the session and whether we need to make any amendments for next session.
