At the EIS Professional Learning Conference 2020, Lesley Whelan and Lesley Walker from Education Scotland led a seminar on professional learning for teacher health and wellbeing.

Outlining the work of the national Teacher Agency Advisory Group, the presenters invited EIS members to discuss their own understandings of how agency applies to their current working conditions.

Attendees were given detailed information on the progress of a package of measures relating to teacher agency which were agreed as part of last year’s pay settlement.

Discussion focused on four key areas: the establishment of a Teacher Innovation Fund, enhancement of Education Scotland’s Teacher Leadership Programme, joint work on reflective supervision and reducing unnecessary workload, and the development of new professional learning opportunities focusing on teachers’ health and wellbeing. Members contributed their thoughts on opportunities and challenges for moving all of these projects forward.
