Please see below for chances to become more involved in the EIS. If we are going to continue building an active, campaigning union, we need members with a range of backgrounds and experience to participate in a range of different ways - please think if the opportunities below would suit you.
If you want to find out more about any of the following before you complete a nomination form, just email the LA office.
Join the Union!
If you are a teacher in Edinburgh, joining the EIS is the best way to get involved and make sure there is always someone in your corner. Upon joining, you gain access to union representatives, a voice in disputes and negotiations, and exclusive resources like our pensions and financial services teams. You can find more information on how to join on the EIS main site.
National Work
Both the National Council and the AGM are great ways of finding out about what is happening nationally both in the EIS and in Scottish education. They offer members a real chance to influence policy and make a difference for teachers and pupils.
EIS National Council Elections
The EIS Council is the principal executive committee of the EIS. It meets around 5 times a year, usually in Edinburgh, and also at the national AGM in June. This year the Edinburgh Local Association is entitled to 10 Council members across the 2 categories of Primary/Nursery and Secondary/Special. The 10 places are divided on a 5:5 basis either way and we are keen to fill all of these. We will put out more information on how to be nominated for the 2026-27 session as it becomes available.
EIS National AGM 2026
This year's AGM will take place in Dundee from 4-6 June 2026. Nomination forms, for members interested in attending the AGM, will be available online in the new year. Edinburgh can nominate up to 16 delegates this year (this is in addition to those Edinburgh members who are already on national EIS Council and automatically attend).
Local Work
Local Association Office Bearers 2026-27
Nominations will be open in January of 2026. Watch this space.
Local Association Executive Committee 2026-27
The LA Executive is the main body driving the work of the EIS in Edinburgh. For it to work effectively, we need Executive members who are willing to get involved, campaign over matters of concern, and shape its work. The new LA Executive starts in March after the local AGM and meets monthly throughout the school year. Our constituion allows for up to 30 members of this committee each year. If you would like more information on taking part for next session please email the LA office.
Local Events
All members are welcome to join us at local rallies and events throughout the year. These range from EIS Campaigns to supporting other unions and our affiliates. Check out the homepage for upcoming events.
