Petition: Stop Cuts to Teacher Numbers in Glasgow

This petition has been organised by Glasgow EIS who went into dispute with the employer, Glasgow City Council on Friday 15th March over proposed cuts to the education budget.

We are gravely concerned at the prospect of the debilitating education cuts to be found in Glasgow's 2024-2026 budget which will lead to:

  • The loss of DYW co-ordinators and the MCR Pathways Programme.

  • Cuts of 172 teaching posts this year with around 450 teaching posts to be cut over the next 3 years.

  • Significant decrease in support for pupils especially in the ASN sector.

  • Cuts to primary school budgets used for essential resources.

  • Vastly increased teacher workload in an already overstretched service.

  • Young people's education suffering as staff are expected to do more with less.

The proposed cuts to this budget stands to leave education in Glasgow in a state of emergency and will cause damage for decades to come for the city's children and young people.  They deserve more, not less.

Please sign our petition to STOP cuts to education in Glasgow.

International Workers' Day 2024

Palestinian Solidarity Rally May 1st

Join the PCS lunchtime rally for Palestine, outside the Scottish Government building at Victoria Quay (VQ) 1, Leith Docks EH6 6QQ (just behind Commercial Street) on Wednesday 1 May, at 1pm to mark the “May Day Workplace Day of Action for Palestine” called by StW, PSC (both of whom the PCS union affiliates to nationally) and others.

This particular event has been organised following discussions with DWP Edinburgh, Lothian & Borders Branch and within a SG PCS Working Group which includes members from various SG Group Branches. It is also in line with the PCS commitment, expressed in a motion passed at our last AGM, to continue to support and encourage members to actively participate in solidarity with the people of Palestine in this catastrophic moment.

We are expecting members from across PCS to attend, including from other SG group branches, and from across the local Edinburgh Trade Union movement.

Our aim is to have lunch together (hence the name “Piece for Palestine”) and discuss the issue and what could be done from a Trade Union perspective. Leith branch will provide stewards and materials for the event but please feel free to bring your PCS or Palestine-related banners and flags. Friends and family are also welcome to attend.  There will be a few short speeches.

We note that this event is a form of trade union activity, participation in which is protected further by membership of a Trade Union.

Campaign for Universal Free School Meals

Members of the LA Executive were proud to attend last week’s Food4Thought campaign event at the Scottish Parliament, organised by the STUC and others, which called on the Scottish Government to implement universal free school meals for all pupils.  The testimony of young people about why this is so important was particularly powerful.  Please go to https://food4thought.uk/get-involved to find a link to a petition to the First Minister, template letters to MSPs, and other ideas for how you can support this vital campaign.
